Nordic Woodland Wedding Shoot

It’s not often one hopes for grey skies, but on the day of our shoot, we were praying for overcast weather. As luck would have it, Mother Nature was on our side and delivered an incredibly atmospheric backdrop for our Nordic Woodland creative shoot.  Three years ago I spent a week in Iceland for my honeymoon. It was an unexpectedly enchanting trip. The landscape was like nothing I had ever seen -- mysterious, stark, and hauntingly beautiful. Since visiting, I have been dreaming up a shoot with Nordic design and a woodland twist.

The models/actors for the day, James and Anika, playing the roles of our Nordic couple Eiric and Asta, could not have been more of a pleasure to work with. The blond, blued-eyed beauties captured the story of our bride and groom. Hair and make-up artist Angela McQueen brought out the natural beauty of our bride for the day and finished her look with an ethereal braided crown. Renna Reddie, of Get Reddie Style, provided the cozy and whimsical attire for our couple, which reflected the feel for which we aspired.

Leslie, from Warehouse 84, who supplied the props and furniture for the shoot, generously offered up her private home set on several acres of land for the shoot. A wooden arbour adorned with a lush woodland garland, created by florist Jen Pogue, was the ideal home for our deer skull (nicknamed Ned). Birch stumps with drip candles and terrariums completed our ceremony set up. A cozy cable-knit sweater cake and copper cake, designed by Le Dolci, perched perfectly atop our wood plank table and antique ladder.

We stayed simple with the table and chairs as a nod to the minimalist Nordic style. A garland cascaded across the table and onto sheepskin rugs. A lush berry-toned centrepiece and antlers were woven beautifully into the tablescape, which also included geometric terrariums, organic shaped plates set on wood chargers, gold flatware, and copper mugs. Custom-designed menus with a subtle geometric pattern and placecards were provided by Paper and Poste.

On site was a forest, where we placed our cozy lounge for the couple. A masculine leather couch grounded the space and was draped with furs and patterned pillows. As we lit the flame on the candles, the true romance of the scene came alive. One of my favourite moments of the day was when Zeus, Leslie’s dog, made a surprise cameo in the shoot and was quickly adopted by our couple for the duration of the day.

Celebrating the bare but enchanting landscape, understated Nordic style, and raw woodland design was a superlatively satisfying endeavour. Lauren from LV Imagery beautifully captured the allure of the scene, and I am so happy to share the photos with you and excited to have Ruffled feature the shoot.
